Magnolia Magic

Magnolia Magic is a celebration of the magnolia flower, its sensual form, delicate beauty and the memories it holds for me.

My appreciation for magnolias began in childhood, with an enormous pink magnolia tree standing at the entrance to my grandmother's home. I was captivated by the extraordinary shape of its flowers, the soft, curvaceous petals, the fragrance and the subtle differences in colour of each petal. That memory has stayed and a renewed fascination reoccurs every springtime.

I am drawn to the sensuality of the magnolia's form. Its sweeping, sculptural petals have an almost feminine quality, suggesting the curves and softness of the female form.  In this painting, I explore that relationship through expressive shapes, fluid movement and a palette of rich pinks, burgundy, warm ochres and delicate blue tones.

Texture plays an important role in this work. Areas of raised, tactile surface contrast with smoother, softer passages of oil paint, echoing the magnolia's combination of delicate appearance and substantial form. An interplay of light and colour creates depth within the petals, while the darker, atmospheric background allows their shapes to emerge and draws the eye through the composition.

Created with an acrylic underpainting and finished in oils, Magnolia Magic is both a personal reflection on childhood memories and an exploration of the beauty, sensuality and enduring appeal of nature.
